In Ghent, the second largest city of Flanders, Ghelamco is developing a new site at the intersection of two important motorways, the E40 & E17. This totally new, multi-functional development consists of different independent parts:
The construction of the retail complex was finished this summer and is conceived as a traditional large scale retail store, adapted to the specific needs of the individual tenant’s requirements. The architecture of this complex is highly distinctive, and includes a green, sloping roof; an attractive façade; and large windows. This not only creates visibility, but also serves as a way of integrating the complex into the overall development of the site.
The multi-functional football stadium, which includes offices and retail space, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in Q2 2013. Construction of the separate office buildings ( Blue Towers) is expected to start in the course of 2013, based on current interest from anchor tenants.
One of the major strengths of this urban development site is its excellent accessibility, given that it is built on the intersection of two of Belgium’s most important motorways. It goes without saying that a location of this kind comes with great visibility. Another major asset of this site is its large car parking capacity, which includes 400 above-ground and 1,100 underground parking spaces. This important project was made possible thanks to close co-operation with the Ghent city authorities who were impressed by Ghelamco’s know-how and realized that they were the best people to make this ambitious global urban development scheme a reality.
